Scope

CF8M is a molybdenum bearing modification of of CF8 alloy and is the cast equivalent of wrought AISI 316 stainless steel. The presence of molybdenum increases the general corrosion resistance and the resistance to pitting by chlorides. The alloy is used in mildly acidic and alkaline conditions and for handling citric, oxalic and phosphoric acids.

Trade Designations

ASTM: A351 CF8M, A743 CF8M, A744 CF8M
ASME: SA351 CF8M
UNS: J92900
ACI: CF-8M
AISI: 316
SAE: 60316
MILITARY: MIL-S-867A, CI. III

What is the difference between ASTM A351 CF8M, A743 CF8M and A744 CF8M?

Chemically and physically these standards are virtually identical with the exception of the silicon content which is slightly higher for both A743 and A744 at 2.00% max. This means that if the process requirements outlined by the purchaser are met, the casting material may be certified to any of these standards. The difference in the standard lies in the intended purpose of the part.

For more information, the applicable standards may be purchased from the ASTM website at the following pages. A351 / A743 / A744

Why is CF8M slightly magnetic?

CF8M is slightly magnetic in comparison to its equivalent wrought grade AISI 316 because of the ferrite content.
